The Best Moorea Overwater Bungalows: Complete Resort Comparison

There are 3 full-service hotels in Moorea that offer the classic overwater bungalow experience: the 3-star Manava Beach Resort, the 4-star Sofitel Kia Ora, and the 4-star Hilton Moorea Lagoon and Spa.

These three properties offer entirely unique experiences, benefits, and drawbacks. I have personally stayed at both the Sofitel and the Hilton, and I have a full video breakdown comparing the two properties—plus dedicated walkthroughs for each linked below!

The Best Overwater Bungalows in Moorea

1. Manava Beach Resort & Spa (3-Star)

Manava is the only 3-star overwater bungalow option on the island, which allows it to have some unexpected perks and a highly competitive price point.

The Vibe & Location Location is where Manava truly shines. It is conveniently situated just a five-minute walk from Maharepa village. This means you are not trapped on the resort property for every meal—you get incredible flexibility and a massive variety of food options! You can easily walk to great local restaurants for dinner, grab lunch at a nearby cafe, or visit a local supermarket to stock up on snacks and drinks to save cash. It also features the largest infinity swimming pool on the island.

Room Selection Guide Manava offers a fantastic variety of room types to fit different group sizes and budgets, ranging from family suites to traditional bungalows.

  • Garden Rooms & Pool Bungalows: If you want to maximize your budget, the standard garden rooms are a fantastic entry point starting around $475. For a slight upgrade, the garden pool bungalows feature a private plunge pool right on your veranda.
  • Overwater Bungalows: Starting around $790, the standard overwater bungalows face the mountains and are situated in shallower water. If you want more privacy and deeper water, you will want to upgrade to the premium overwater bungalows, which face out toward the deep ocean drop-off.

The Drawbacks It is a smaller property overall, and the lagoon snorkeling here isn’t the best on the island. Because the premium overwater bungalows are located right at the edge of the deep drop-off, you don’t always get those dreamy, light-blue shallow waters right under your deck.

Best For Travelers prioritizing walking-distance convenience, a wide variety of off-site dining options, family group layouts, and great baseline value.

2. Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort (4-Star)

The Sofitel boasts a truly dreamy location, situated directly on Temae Beach, which is widely considered the best stretch of white sand on the island.

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea – Toatea Lookout

The Vibe & Location Because of its location on the eastern edge of Moorea, you get stunning, unobstructed views of the main island of Tahiti right across the channel. If you rent a car and drive around the island, you can actually pull over at the Toatea Lookout, situated directly above the property, for incredible panoramic photos of the resort and the lagoon! The property is very spread out, offering a highly secluded, romantic atmosphere, and onsite dining at Restaurant K is fantastic for an upscale night out where you can eat with your feet right in the sand.

Room Selection Guide The resort layout features distinct options depending on how close you want to be to the water.

  • Garden Bungalows: Starting around $550, these rooms are beautifully spread around the lush, tropical property, offering a ton of privacy tucked into the foliage.
  • Luxury Beach Bungalows: If you want immediate water access without the overwater price tag, these are located right on the sand. You can literally walk right off your deck and straight into the lagoon.
  • Superior vs. Luxury Overwater Villas: Starting around $985, both tiers feature glass viewing panels in the floor. The superior villas are located closer to the main resort area, while the luxury villas are on the furthest points of the pontoons, offering massive floor plans and total tranquility. I personally stayed in the Superior Horizon Bungalow, which is located at the very end of the pontoon and offers completely unobstructed views of the horizon!

The Breakfast Tip When booking your room, make sure to explicitly choose the rate that includes breakfast! This guarantees you access to their massive daily breakfast buffet (which is absolutely incredible) rather than having to pay exorbitant a la carte resort prices every morning.

Transit Lounge Perk If you have a late evening flight out of Tahiti to get back home, the Sofitel is incredibly accommodating. They have a dedicated changing room and shower available for guests to use after checkout, meaning you can spend your last day lounging by the pool or snorkeling before cleaning up to catch the evening ferry back.

The Drawbacks The reef is further out here, meaning you have to swim into fairly deep water to get to the best marine life. Another major drawback to consider is daytime privacy. Because the reef is so stunning, many off-resort snorkel tours bring their boats right next to the property’s bungalows. The resort also shares its coastline with Temae Beach (a public beach), meaning you will see more foot traffic and boat activity during the day than you would at a completely isolated resort. Finally, the property is very spread out, which requires a lot of walking, and it is far from the main local villages, so you will need to arrange taxi pickups or rent a car to leave for dinner.

Best For Couples and luxury seekers prioritizing a postcard-perfect beach, top-tier dining, and an incredibly romantic atmosphere.

3. Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa (4-Star)

The Hilton is a medium-sized property perched beautifully between Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. The layout is incredibly easy to navigate, and the resort vibe is highly welcoming with top-tier service.

Hilton Moorea King Beach Overwater Bungalow

The Vibe & Location The resort is known for having a perfectly protected, calm lagoon with the absolute best shore snorkeling on the island, making it perfect for beginners. Its biggest highlight is the Toatea Crêperie & Bar, an overwater restaurant right in the middle of the bungalow walkways. At night, the water beneath the restaurant is illuminated, and you can watch blacktip reef sharks glide right under your feet while you eat.

Room Selection Guide If you are worried that the costs of a classic overwater stay are just too high, the Hilton has some fantastic alternative options to lower your price tag.

  • King Beach Overwater Bungalow: Starting around $750, this is the exact room I stayed in, and it is a perfect middle ground. You enter the room from the landside, but your back deck gives you direct entry right into the shallow waters of the lagoon!
  • Garden Pool Bungalows: Starting around $575, these are an incredible alternative value because every single one comes with its own private plunge pool. You don’t have to stay over the water to get your own private place to swim.
  • Overwater Tiers: Starting around $950, the general rule here is that the closer you are to the beach, the cheaper the price. Standard overwater bungalows are closest to the shore, while the panoramic and premium panoramic bungalows sit at the very ends of the pontoons for completely unobstructed ocean views.

The Hilton Honors Gold Status Hack Breakfast at the Hilton operates on tiers. If you don’t have hotel status, you can simply choose to add breakfast onto your standard room booking. However, there is a massive hack: if you hold an American Express Platinum card, it automatically grants you Hilton Honors Gold status. This status gets you the continental breakfast entirely free (and it also got us two free welcome cocktails!). Even though it is just the cold options, the spread is absolutely delicious. If you do want the hot food items, you just pay a small upgrade fee rather than the full $50 per person. This benefit easily saves a couple $100 a day!

The Drawbacks It is the furthest away from local off-resort restaurants, so renting a car or coordinating restaurant dinner pickups is essential. The onsite Grill restaurant food can also be hit-or-miss. Unlike the Sofitel, the Hilton does not have an easily accessible shower and changing room for you to use after checkout—so keep that in mind if you have a late departure out of Tahiti.

Best For Snorkeling beginners, marine life lovers, and travelers looking to utilize credit card perks to save on daily resort costs.

The Verdict: How to Choose

If you are trying to decide on the perfect overwater stay, break it down by your travel style:

  • Choose Manava if you want to walk off the property to local restaurants, need a great family setup, value flexibility in your food options, and want the most competitive price point.
  • Choose the Sofitel if you are looking for an upscale, romantic couples’ getaway centered around a pristine white-sand beach and fine dining.
  • Choose the Hilton if your main priority is walking out of your room and instantly snorkeling with incredible marine life in calm, shallow water.

⚠️ Crucial Logistics Tip: The Tahiti Buffer Night

When planning your resort stays, you have to account for the ferry schedule between the main island of Tahiti (where your international flight lands) and Moorea. The ferries do not run 24 hours a day.

If you have an early morning flight out of French Polynesia, or if your arrival flight lands late at night, the ferries simply won’t be running. In these cases, you will be forced to spend a buffer night on Tahiti. To make this transition incredibly easy, we stayed one night at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. It is located just minutes from the airport and makes for a fantastic, stress-free spot to crash before or after a long travel day!

🤿 What to Pack: My Go-To Snorkeling Gear

Since snorkeling is such a massive part of the Moorea experience—whether you are braving the deeper outer reefs at the Sofitel or enjoying the beginner-friendly coral gardens right off your deck at the Hilton—having your own reliable gear is a total game-changer. Don’t rely on worn-out resort rentals! Here is exactly what I pack:

  • 🤿 My Favorite Snorkel Mask: Easy for first timer – just be safe and take breaks – best for shallow water snorkeling
  • 🥽 A More Classic Mask Option: If you prefer a traditional mask and snorkel setup, this one is incredibly comfortable for longer swims.
  • 💦 Water Hammock: Absolute perfection for just floating in those dreamy light-blue waters right off your bungalow deck. Also helps with snorkeling if you lay sideways
  • 👟 Reliable Water Shoes: The reefs can be sharp, and stonefish are a real thing in French Polynesia. Always protect your feet!
